As we move further into this new paradigm of legal cannabis, it’s important to understand and appreciate the enormous scope of benefits associated with the exponentially emerging market. Benefits that range from providing natural alternative options to dangerous pharmaceuticals, to freeing up the courts of petty possession charges and unnecessary convictions, etc. – legal hemp and cannabis is certainly a boon for our culture and society. However, it is also crucial to be mindful of the side effects that come from such rapid growth, chief among them: Waste.
At Point 3 Products, we proudly stand at the forefront of customized sustainable cannabis industry packaging; we’re constantly searching for new ways to make our customers’ waste index the smallest it can be. As mindful citizens of Planet Earth, we realize our current position as inheritors of a planet in desperate need for increased conservation. Polluted oceans threaten our fragile ecosystems, but with more awareness and education we believe our generation can turn the tide. Keep reading as we discuss sustainability as it relates to modern cannabis packaging.
Sustainability in 2019
We are nearing almost two decades since California became the first state in the union to legalize cannabis for medicinal use. Therefore, since 1996 we’ve seen the need to develop consistent, reliable packaging that protects the specific flavors and attributes of the cannabis product while providing safeguards for children and pets. The emphasis on recyclable materials has been present since the beginning, but with the recent wave of recreational legalization shaking up the scene, it’s safe to say that the volume of production (and therefore waste) has increased at lightning speed.
In just a few years of Colorado’s recreational legalization, we’ve seen a tremendous amount of change regarding the various packaging techniques of cannabis brands and dispensaries. From bulky plastic carry out bags, to vape cartridge holders, concentrate containers and many more, the balance of manufacturing sustainable packaging while maintaining safety has certainly been problematic to achieve. Certain dispensaries have even answered the call of sustainability and have begun to offer paper carry out bags. But while brown paper bags made of recycled paper are certainly a great alternative, it’s not realistic to believe they are the best for the task.
The Future of Cannabis Packaging
With the passing of 2018’s Hemp Farming Act, the realm of possibilities of recyclable, sustainable cannabis packaging was blown wide open. Now, hemp has finally been recognized by the mainstream as one of the best options when it comes to the production of various types of cannabis and hemp packaging. Whether providing containers for flower, edibles, concentrates, salves, tinctures or any other cannabis product, we hope to see hemp as the leading source of materials in the near future.
